Suicide Prevention Campaign
Suicide Prevention Campaign

Is a revolutionary act to tell our story to ourselves
Our priority is the mental health of our people. Recent natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic have had a negative effect on the emotional well-being of many, and support is urgently needed. During January 2020, 24 suicide deaths were reported among older adults. In February 2020, a total of 23 suicide deaths were reported, and in just one week, 5 suicide deaths were reported in two days. A heartbreaking scene that is not new to the reality of Puerto Rico. In 2018, 243 suicides were reported, of which 87% were men and 13% were women. A 72% were aged 50 to 69 years, and an average of 8% of them identified as LGBT +. We continue to provide mental health support that includes therapy, counseling, mindfulness sessions, and more. In these efforts, we have joined forces with New York City and their Department of the Aging to develop the EXPRÉSATE PUERTO RICO campaign and its English version OPEN UP PUERTO RICO. The campaign is aimed at LGBT + older adults and older adults in general in Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York City. Our genuine thanks to the City of New York for their support and effort in making this campaign possible. We continue to contribute to what we value the most: the mental health and wellbeing of our people.
